The legal basis

What is an ACSP, and why does it exist?

An Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP) is a firm — typically an accountant, solicitor or company formation agent — that Companies House has authorised to verify individuals' identities on its behalf. The requirement was introduced by the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, alongside the Registrar's (Identity Verification by ACSPs) Rules 2025, which together brought mandatory identity verification to the UK company register for the first time.

Checks performed by an ACSP must meet the Companies House identity verification standard. According to GOV.UK's own guidance on meeting the Companies House identity verification standard, six core steps apply to every check: asking for identity information, gathering evidence of identity, checking that evidence is genuine, checking the identity belongs to the person presenting it, keeping records for a defined period, and deciding whether to proceed with submission.

As your ACSP, we complete all six steps on your behalf and submit an Identity Verification Statement directly to Companies House — you never have to navigate the process alone.

Who this applies to

Who must verify their identity

  • Directors

Every director of a UK company — UK-resident or overseas.

  • People with significant control

Anyone registered as a PSC of a company.

  • LLP members

Designated and non-designated members of an LLP.

  • General partners

General partners of a limited partnership.

  • Persons filing on behalf of a company

Anyone who files documents with Companies House on a company's behalf.

Two verification routes

Digital or in-person — both fully permitted

GOV.UK's guidance is explicit that identity checks can be completed remotely, in person, or through an ACSP using a commercial identity service provider. We offer both routes honestly, and recommend whichever suits your documents.

Route A · Fastest

Online / Digital (IDVT)

A secure link to your phone. Photograph your document, take a live selfie, done in about 10 minutes. Verified through our sub-processor, TrustID, a certified Identity Service Provider.

Accepted — any ONE of:

  • Biometric or machine-readable passport (any country, up to 6 months past expiry still machine-readable)
  • Irish passport card
  • UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man or EU photocard driving licence
  • EU / Norway / Iceland / Liechtenstein biometric national identity card
  • UK biometric residence permit (BRP) or biometric residence card (BRC)
  • UK Frontier Worker permit

Process: secure link sent to you → smartphone photo of document + live selfie (~10 minutes) → reviewed by us → submitted to Companies House.

Route B · No biometric passport needed

In-Person / Manual

Two original documents, examined in person by a trained reviewer at our office. No photocopies or photographs of copies.

Either 2 from Group A, or 1 from Group A + 1 from Group B:

Group A — photo ID

  • Non-biometric passport
  • EEA national identity card
  • UK or international photocard driving licence
  • UK biometric residence permit (BRP) or biometric residence card (BRC)
  • HM Forces ID card
  • UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man firearms licence

Group B — proof of address (dated within 3 months)

  • Bank or building society statement
  • Utility bill
  • Council tax statement
  • Mortgage statement
  • Birth certificate
  • Marriage or civil partnership certificate

If you live outside the UK, at least one document must be government-issued.

Process: documents seen as originals, in person at our office with a trained reviewer → reviewed by us → submitted to Companies House.

What happens next

Our process, start to finish

  1. Engagement letter & fee

You sign our engagement letter online and pay the applicable fixed fee. We open your case the same working day.

  2. Data & documents

You complete our online application: personal details, company details, and confirm which documents you'll use.

  3. TrustID or manual check

You complete the digital IDVT check via TrustID, or attend an in-person appointment for the manual route.

  4. Our compliance review

We independently review the outcome against our 29-point compliance checklist.

  5. Submission to Companies House

We submit your Identity Verification Statement as your authorised agent.

  6. Your personal code

Companies House emails you an 11-character personal code directly — we never see or handle this code.

  7. Completion confirmation

We send written confirmation once everything is complete.

Your Companies House personal code, explained

Once your identity has been verified — whether through GOV.UK One Login or through us as your ACSP — Companies House issues an 11-character personal code. This code is personal to you, not to any company you direct or hold significant control over (GOV.UK). You verify your identity once, and the same code is then reused to confirm your verified status for every appointment you hold — every directorship, every PSC role, across every company — rather than repeating the identity check for each one. You do still need to actively provide that code for each role and each company as your filings require it: it links to each appointment individually, it does not link your appointments together automatically. Keep it secure, in the same way you'd protect an HMRC Unique Taxpayer Reference — and if you ever believe it's been compromised, Companies House can cancel it and issue a new one.

No overseas exemption — but a clear route

Overseas and non-UK-resident directors

There is no exemption from Companies House identity verification for directors who live outside the UK. The Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023 applies the same duty regardless of nationality or residence. What changes for overseas directors is which route actually works in practice.

GOV.UK's self-verification service, One Login, accepts a biometric passport from any country — genuinely useful if you hold one. But its other accepted documents (UK driving licence, UK BRP, UK BRC, UK Frontier Worker permit) are all UK-specific, and its two fallback options for people without those documents are explicitly offered "if you live in the UK," per GOV.UK. That leaves a real gap for non-UK residents without a biometric passport — no UK phone number, no UK bank or credit footprint, and no UK address to fall back on.

As an ACSP, we close that gap. GOV.UK confirms that identity verification through an authorised agent "can be done from any country" (GOV.UK), using a wider document list — including foreign driving licences, national ID cards, visas and work permits — with the one added rule that at least one document must be government-issued if you're not UK-resident. Verification can be completed by secure digital link at a time that fits your time zone, and your foreign home address is accepted and never published on the public register. If you do not hold a biometric passport, the two-document route requires an in-person appointment at our Bedford or London–Stratford office, at £125 per applicant. Overseas remote verification is £119, all-inclusive. UK remote verification is £49; standard office appointments are £125 for either residency group.

Working with firms and groups

For accountants, law firms and corporate groups

If you're managing identity verification across a client base, a company secretarial function, or a corporate group with several subsidiaries, the challenge isn't the individual check — it's coordinating dozens of confirmation statement dates, PSC 14-day windows and document types without anything slipping through. Each person's identity still has to be verified individually; GOV.UK confirms the Companies House personal code is "personal to you, not your company," so there is no single check that covers a group.

What we offer instead is a consistent process at volume: one named point of contact managing your batch, the same compliance checklist applied to every individual, a shared view of who's completed their check and who's still pending, and seven-year record retention applied consistently across your whole client base or group — so there's one audit trail to point to, not a patchwork of informal notes. Firms that would rather not register as their own Companies House authorised agent can refer verification work to us under a straightforward working relationship, while remaining their client's primary point of contact throughout.

Bulk remote fees are £39 per applicant with a UK or EU chip passport (minimum 25 such applicants) and £85 per overseas applicant without a chip passport (minimum 10 such applicants), all-inclusive. Each minimum is counted separately. Smaller numbers pay the standard price: £49 online, £119 overseas by video call, or £125 for an office appointment. For larger volumes, email info@taxandaccountinghub.com to confirm pricing. Standard office appointments are £125 per applicant and are quoted separately from remote bulk orders.

Your data, handled properly

We retain records relating to your engagement — including failed verification attempts — for 7 years from completion, then securely destroy them, in line with our regulatory obligations. Documents are submitted securely over an encrypted connection and only shared with our sub-processor TrustID (for digital checks) and Companies House (name, date of birth, address, email and document reference only — never copies of your documents). Frequently asked questions

Everything else you might want to know

Is this fully remote?

Yes — no travel or appointment is needed for the digital route. The two-document route is different: original documents have to be examined in person, by appointment at our Bedford or London–Stratford office.

Can someone else do the camera steps for me?

No — you must complete the identity check personally. It cannot be completed on your behalf by a third party.

Can I post my documents to you?

No — please never post original identity documents to us. The two-document route is carried out in person: you bring your originals to your appointment at Bedford or London–Stratford, a trained reviewer examines them while you wait, and you take them away with you the same day. Nothing is retained and nothing travels by post.

My passport has expired — can I still use it?

Sometimes. Digital checks tolerate passports expired by up to 6 months; in-person checks can tolerate up to 18 months. Please check with us first.

I've changed my name — what do I need?

A marriage certificate, civil partnership certificate, or deed poll showing the name change.

Is my personal code still valid if my document later expires?

Yes — once issued, your personal code remains valid indefinitely, even if the document you verified with later expires.

What if my digital check fails for a technical reason?

We'll re-issue your verification link once, free of charge.

What does it cost?

£49 for UK remote verification; £119 for overseas remote verification; £125 for a standard office appointment for either residency group. All-inclusive.

What happens once I'm verified?

Once you connect your personal code to your Companies House record, the public register shows your name, your ACSP (Tax And Accounting Hub Ltd), our AML supervisory body (AAT), and the date — never your documents or home address.
